Hello lovely souls,
I’m already pondering the choice of this title because… quite frankly I do care. I care too much. Is that so bad?
In caring so much, I find myself under-sharing. Figuring out where we can remain considered and where we can afford to let loose a little, I suppose is the premise of this post.
From time to time I’ll go relatively silent in the online world. The reasons are threefold:
I can’t help but get sucked into online comparison which ain’t so good for my head.
I overthink how others will interpret what I share and talk myself out of sharing anything (lo and behold nobody really cares).
I take too long deciding how to share work that I build pressure and expectations that it must do well! and if it doesn’t I resist posting for a while.
So, how am I combatting this need to both share work more consistently when my brain naturally wants to recluse from the online world…
Use the process
Flat-lay shots, 2 hour long drawing videos, random sketchbook pages and colour swatches - this is the contents of my camera roll… riveting!
If much of what you do happens during the process it seems daft not to utilise this. Majority of it might look crap, but trust me, in-front of the right eyeballs, scribbles are stardust. Pristine, flawless, seamless online content has become the norm, it’s nice to drop in once in a while with a “Hi! Look at this mess that may or may not become a thing”.
Scatter, sprinkle, share
Using multiple platforms can become overwhelming but if you have the work for one app, why not use it on multiple? Don’t get me wrong this is quite timely. It requires some planning to meet the requirements or audience type of each platform, but that’s where magic can happen. The more you share the more chance you build spaces to find your people. So scatter away!
Don’t just do it, do it your way
(Sorry Nike)
Nothing is completely unique anymore. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to standout in most creative industries. How you share and document your work could be the thing that sets you apart. I’ve felt inclined to use trending audio, click bait titles and succumb to the algorithms but I found it incredibly awkward and people see right through that.
You can still do the thing, but do it your way. Sharing and documenting holds much of the same qualities as painting - they both take time, trial and error, resistance and pivoting before you find your rhythm.
Put the three steps above together…
Sharing my process my way
I’ve tried to make the most out of this painting but more importantly its process! If you enjoy paint along videos and Q&A’s then this one is a double whammy and I’d love for you to join me there!
As always, thank you so much for being here!
Until next time,
Going to be thinking of the line “In-front of the right eyeballs, scribbles are stardust” for a long time, LOVE LOVE ♥️
This was a timely read for me- I have definitely been feeling a lot of these things lately! Loving the “scatter, sprinkle, share” advice 🧁
